Regions Of Abdomen

For anatomical positioning system the abdomen divided into nine areas.Each area is known as region. The regions-

1 Right hypochondrium

2 Epigastric

3 Left hypochondrium

4 Right lumber

5 Umbilical

6 Left lumber

7 Right iliac

8 Hypogastric

9 Left iliac


The divided lines or planes

There are four imaginary lines to divided abdomen into nine regions. The lines are-

Two horizontal lines

1 Transpyloric plane : The plane joining tip of right and left 9th costal cartilage anteriorly, lower border of 1st lumber vertebra posteriorly.

2 Trans tubercular plane : The plane joining tubercle of right and left iliac crest anteriorly,upper border of 5th lumber vertebra posteriorly.

Two vertical lines

1 Left midclavicular plane : plane joining midpoint of clavicle,tip of 9th costal cartilage and mid inguinal point of left side.

2 Right midclavicular plane : plane joining midpoint of clavicle tip of 9th costal cartilage and mid inguinal point of right side.
