Long bone are those in which the length exceeds the breath e.g. femur.
Characteristics
A long bone presents a shaft and two ends
The ends are enlarged and posses articular surface.
Typically shaft consists of medullary cavity which is filled with bone marrow.
Short Bone
Typically each short bone is cubical in shape and presents six surface four for articular and two for muscular attachment. They are found in the part where the skeleton intended for strength.
Example : Carpal and tarsal bones are short bone.
Flat Bone
Flat bone are consisting two parts of compact bone with intervening spongy bone and marrow.Flat bones are found in those areas where some organs are protected by bones.
Example : Skull,ribs.
Pneumatic Bone
Bone having marrow cavity replaced by air spaces are called pneumatic bone.The cavity is known a sinus,Pneumatic bones make the part of the body lighter
Example : Pneumatic bones are present in skull,particularly maxilla,frontal.
Sesamoid Bone
Sesamoid means seed like. These are nodules of bone found embedded in the tendons or joint capsule having no periosteum and Haversian system.
Example : Patella.
