Formation Of Thoracic Cage & Contents Thoracic Cavity

Thorax
By the diaphragm the trunk of the body has been divided into two parts.The upper part is known as thorax.


Thoracic Cage

The bony framework of the thorax is know as thoracic cage.It is osseocartilaginous and elastic.

Formation 

Thoracic cage is formed by 12 thoracic vertebrae,12 pairs of ribs and the sternum. The bony arrangements are-

Anteriorly : Sternum and costal cartilage.

Posteriorly : 12 thoracic vertebrae.

On each side : 12 pairs of rib.

Thoracic Cavity

The space enclosed within thoracic cage is known as thoracic cavity.

Contents of thoracic cavity
1 Lung with pleura

2 Heart with pericardium

3 Origin and part of great vessels

4 Trachea & pericardium

5 Oesophagus

6 Part of thymus

7 Other soft tissues - e.g. vessels,lymphatic,tissues etc.
